Comprising Erena Baker, Sarah Hudson, Bridget Reweti, and Terri Te Tau, the Mataaho Collective represents a diverse range of Māori affiliations, including Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa Rangātira, Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi, and Rangitāne ki Wairarapa.

‘Takapau,’ showcased at Te Papa Tongarewa, features 200 square meters of woven reflective truck strops, paying homage to ceremonial woven mats, Dr. Ngahuia Murphy’s studies, and the artistic legacy of Kura Te Waru Rewiri. Dr. Nina Tonga curated the installation, which was selected as the Best Participant in the International Exhibition for ‘Stranieri Ovunque’ – Foreigners Everywhere.

Associate Professor Vercoe expressed her delight at Mataaho Collective’s win, emphasizing its significance in showcasing the power of indigenous Māori artists to the world. She credited renowned Māori artist Dr. Maureen Lander for her contributions as a teacher and mentor to the collective. Dr. Lander’s influence has been profound, and she was also honored with the prestigious Walters Prize in 2021.

Additionally, Dr. Tonga, alumna and former lecturer at the University of Auckland’s Art History department, played a pivotal role as the curator of Mataaho Collective’s exhibition. Her efforts in curating the groundbreaking ‘Te Puni Aroaro’ exhibition in 2022 and commissioning the artwork ‘Takapau’ have been instrumental in the collective’s success.
