Renowned classical tenor Elias Wilson, a proud Biripi man, is set to grace the stage with the River City Voices for their first performance of 2024, featuring Mozart’s Requiem. Scheduled for Friday, May 17 at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Wilson expressed his excitement about joining the choir for the first time. Elias Wilson Joins River City Voices for Mozart’s Requiem Premiere
Wilson, celebrated for his performances across various genres, including churches, chamber concerts, operas, and musical theatre, sees his collaboration with River City Voices as a natural fit. “Sydney is a massive city, and the opportunity for people to get together and share their love of classical music shouldn’t be exclusive to those who are able and willing to trek into the city,” he said. “I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to work with River City Voices this season, and Mozart’s Requiem is an absolute classic.”
River City Voices, known for its collaborative spirit, is excited to team up with Western Sydney Philharmonic (WestPhil) for this performance. Max Holzner, Chair of WestPhil, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing their commitment to excellence, diversity, and community engagement.
Artistic director Sarah Penicka-Smith shared her deep connection to Mozart’s Requiem, recalling her experience with the music at a young age. “Finding an honest way to tell Mozart’s story through this music – and the story of the people around him who saved the Requiem – is an ongoing challenge,” she said.
Wilson’s involvement in the performance resonates with his personal connection to rivers, symbolizing his family’s heritage. “I think of our family as river mob… so perhaps it’s apt that I’m performing with River City Voices this year,” he said.
Beyond his performances, Wilson continues his work with the Aboriginal Culture, Heritage & Arts Association (ACHAA), emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and representation.
Looking ahead, Wilson has an exciting lineup of projects for 2024, including a performance curated by Ria Andriani exploring music from the perspective of people with disabilities and another Koori opera project.
With Wilson’s artistic vocals and the choir’s talented creatives, River City Voices promises to deliver a moving rendition of Mozart’s Requiem, capturing themes of power, faith, awe, and hope.
