National Indigenous Art Fair Returns to Sydney for its Fifth Edition

The National Indigenous Art Fair returns to Sydney for its fifth edition on Gadigal land in Sydney this May, promising a vibrant showcase of indigenous artistry and culture.

Celebrated as an ethical marketplace, NIAF serves as a platform for both remote and local First Nations artists from across Australia to exhibit and sell their creations directly to the public.

Attendees can expect to explore a diverse array of artworks, textiles, handmade jewelry, ceramics, and artifacts, all sourced from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists representing community-owned art centers in regions such as the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia.

Peter Cooley, CEO of First Hand Solutions, expressed his anticipation for the upcoming event, highlighting its significance in providing attendees with a rare opportunity to engage directly with artists hailing from some of Australia’s most remote areas.

“The National Indigenous Art Fair is an opportunity to meet the artist and hear the stories of this art directly from the maker with the knowledge that whatever the visitor spends will go directly back to these artists and their communities,” Cooley remarked.

NIAF offers more than just an art marketplace; it’s a weekend festival filled with live performances, cultural displays, workshops, and interactive Indigenous weaving circles. Attendees will have the chance to immerse themselves in Indigenous culture, taste native bush foods, and learn about traditional practices firsthand.

Moreover, NIAF is deeply committed to preserving and strengthening cultural practices and languages by supporting remote Indigenous art centers and their artists. All proceeds from the fair go directly to the artists and their Indigenous-owned and governed art centers, addressing the economic exclusion experienced by residents of remote Indigenous communities.
