Australian Defence Force Pacific Sports Program Empowers Samoan Youth Through Sports

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) Pacific Sports Program recently concluded a highly successful initiative aimed at enhancing sporting capabilities and fostering youth development in Samoa. From March 18 to 23, the program provided comprehensive coaching, referee accreditation, and first-aid training in touch football, rugby league, and basketball, empowering local participants to lead and excel in these sports. Empowering Youth Through Sports: Eighteen-year-old Kajrie Tauiliili from Lotopa expressed excitement about applying her newfound skills to support the Oceania Cup squad. Despite initial nerves, Tauiliili emphasized the transformative power of passion and willingness in overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities provided by the program. For many young Samoans like Tauiliili, sports offer a pathway to personal growth and community engagement amidst financial constraints.

Rewarding Experiences and Cultural Significance: Leading Aircraftwoman Amanda Crowley, one of the touch football instructors, reflected on the enthusiasm and dedication of course participants leading up to the touch football tournament. She highlighted the integral role of sports in Samoan culture, where children are immersed in various sporting activities from a young age. This program not only enhances sporting skills but also strengthens cultural bonds and community spirit.

Supporting Development and Growth: Miss Tauiliili emphasized the significance of support from external sources like the ADF, which provided much-needed equipment to overcome financial barriers. Building Knowledge and Awareness: Captain Matthew Mitchell, one of the training instructors, highlighted the importance of delivering level one coaching and refereeing courses to enhance the delivery of touch football in Samoa. The program aims to increase knowledge and awareness of sports, fostering competitiveness and participation among Samoan youth. Captain Mitchell expressed optimism for the program’s continued growth and its positive impact on sports development in Samoa.
