For two decades, the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs) have served as a beacon for First Nations artists in Australia. Every August, thousands gather in the warm, dry climate of the Top End, particularly on the gentle slopes of the Darwin Amphitheatre, to celebrate Indigenous music.
The evening transforms into a true festival where families spread out blankets, groups of friends chat and dance, while children run under the stars on Larrakia land. They all come together to celebrate the NIMAs, the biggest and most beloved celebration of Indigenous music in Australia.
Since its inception in 2004, these awards have become an annual tradition that unites musicians and First Nations communities in celebrating the artistry of the world’s oldest living culture. The two-decade history of the awards also reflects the rise of Indigenous music in Australia.
The NIMAs have honored Indigenous talent from past, present, and future, featuring iconic trailblazers like Yothu Yindi, Warumpi Band, and Jessica Mauboy, as well as artists like Dan Sultan, Briggs, Baker Boy, and many more. The awards have evolved and expanded alongside the communities and cultures they celebrate, growing from a Northern Territory-exclusive event to a nationally recognized platform.
These awards have not only launched storied careers but have also provided a homecoming for celebrating local and international achievements with the community, whether it’s the global success of The Kid Laroi or the grassroots efforts behind the nominees for the Community Clip of the Year award.
