Nominations Open for Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program

Nominations are now open for the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program, offering Indigenous youth aged 18–25 a unique opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and drive positive change in their communities. Nominations Open for Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the program has supported 720 young Indigenous leaders since its inception. Phillip Jose, a Kuku-Yalanji and Torres Strait (Erub and Darnley Islands) man and 2023 program alumni, shared his inspiring experience. “What attracted me to the program was my desire to learn and grow,” he said. “The most impactful moment was when I stepped into parliament and had the opportunity to carry my grandfather’s name through those doors, in a powerful place where government once preyed on the downfall of my people. I was given the opportunity to speak and use my voice when my people were once not given this same opportunity.”

Program Benefits

Successful applicants will receive travel, meals, and accommodation, along with the chance to form lasting friendships and networks within a culturally safe and supportive community.

The Queensland Government, in announcing the program, highlighted the vital role of Indigenous people in fostering positive outcomes within First Nations communities and across the state.

Quandamooka woman and Minister for Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities and the Arts, Leeanne Enoch, emphasized the importance of young people in shaping both the state’s future and its present communities.

“Young people are not just an important part of the state’s future – but an important part of our communities today,” Minister Enoch said. “We are calling on passionate First Nations young people and emerging leaders who are focused on change and learning new skills to join the 2024 Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program. This opportunity for self-development, leadership, and professional skills will empower participants on their personal leadership journey.”
