Supporting Indigenous Art and Artists

Artbank Director Zoë Rodriguez expressed her delight in celebrating and supporting the 2024 National Indigenous Art Fair. “No one can deny the significance and central place of Indigenous art and artists in Australia’s contemporary art sector,” she said. “That’s why Artbank is proud to host the launch of the National Indigenous Art Fair at our Sydney premises this year. We encourage art lovers to get down to the fair over the weekend to view some beautiful and unique art – and maybe pick up a piece to enjoy at home.”

Promoting Economic Inclusion and Cultural Preservation

The primary purpose of the art fair is to support remote art centres, establishing a sustainable pathway to address the severe economic exclusion faced by those living in remote Indigenous communities. Every purchase made at the fair will directly benefit the artists and their Indigenous-owned and governed art centres.

The fair also aims to enhance Indigenous-led governance structures, promoting leadership in the arts, business, and community decision-making processes while preserving and strengthening cultural practices. Additionally, the event seeks to create meaningful employment opportunities for Indigenous women, who represent approximately 70 percent of the artists, generating vital income as art centre sales often serve as their primary source of external revenue.

A Fair Trade Marketplace

Established by the charitable organization First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation, the National Indigenous Art Fair operates as a fair trade marketplace, ensuring ethical practices and fair compensation for the artists involved. This initiative not only supports the economic well-being of Indigenous communities but also fosters a deeper appreciation and understanding of Indigenous art and culture among the broader public.
