Reece Walsh, the brash young fullback for Queensland, is eager to renew his on-field rivalry with NSW playmaker Jarome Luai when State of Origin kicks off on Wednesday night. Queensland’s Walsh Ready to Rekindle Origin Rivalry with Luai
“It’s exciting,” Walsh said, acknowledging their competitive nature. “We’re both out there giving our all.”
The pair’s feud began in 2023 when Luai accused Walsh of pulling his hair during Queensland’s series opener win. Their fiery encounter escalated in game two with a sending-off offense for striking, resulting in suspensions.
Despite past tensions, Walsh recognizes Luai’s passion and understands the intensity of Origin. “It’s just pride and passion for your state,” he explained. “Sometimes it boils over, but it’s all part of the game.”
This rivalry extends beyond on-field battles. After Queensland’s dominant win in game two, Walsh reportedly reached out to Luai who had faced criticism and even death threats.
“I sent him a message to see how he was doing,” Walsh revealed, highlighting their shared humanity beyond the competition. “We both have families to go home to.”
Now, with a successful club season under his belt and a focus on self-improvement, Walsh is ready to contribute to Queensland’s Origin campaign. He looks forward to continuing his growth and facing off with Luai once again. This Wednesday’s clash promises renewed fireworks between these two fierce competitors.
