A Major Debut

The exhibition holds significant meaning for both the artist and the gallery. It represents Maymuru’s first major presentation outside of the Northern Territory, while also marking the gallery’s third partnership with a remote Indigenous community.

Carrying a Legacy

Maymuru, an artist from the Maŋgalili community, draws inspiration from his family’s rich artistic heritage. “My father Baluka, a renowned artist, imparted to me our sacred clan designs,” he shared. He also draws influence from his grandfather and great-uncle, both pioneering Yolŋu artists.

Beyond the Canvas: A Duality of Roles

Maymuru’s artistic expression is deeply intertwined with his cultural responsibilities. “Residing in Maŋgalili clan lands… I fulfill the role of Ḏalkarra, upholding the law, songs, patterns, designs, and sacred rites of the Yirritja moiety,” he explains.

A Universe on Display

The paintings themselves are captivating. Dr. David Sequeira, Director of the gallery, highlights the “cosmological quality” of Maymuru’s work. The Milky Way isn’t just a subject, but a representation of his ancestral songlines. While the paintings appear similar at first glance, closer inspection reveals subtle variations in the stars’ positioning and density.

Immersion and Connection

Dr. Sequeira emphasizes the immersive nature of the exhibition. “There’s a real opportunity for people to immerse themselves in these works, to get lost in them,” he says. The paintings encourage contemplation and reflection on humanity’s place within the vast universe.

See it for Yourself

“Paul Maymuru: New Paintings Milŋiyawuy” is on display at the Fiona and Sidney Myer Gallery from May 24 to June 22. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the Milky Way through the lens of a Yolŋu artist and cultural leader.
