This groundbreaking festival aims to shine a spotlight on the diverse and resilient First Nations SBLGBTIQA+ community in the Kimberley region, offering empowerment, visibility, and a safe space for self-expression without fear of judgment or discrimination. Founder Tony Lee is thrilled about the momentum from last year’s event and is anticipating an even bigger celebration in 2024. “The success of our event last year showed us the importance of celebrating First Nations Queer culture,” he said. “We’re excited to provide a platform for our community to connect, showcase their strength and diversity, and celebrate our Blak rainbow mob.”

The festival kicked off with a bang on Saturday, April 27, featuring the Out and Proud Kimberley Blak Pride Parade, the Writing Blak and Queer Panel, and the Kimberley Blak Pride Spoken Word. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. The Kimberley Blak Pride Festival 2024 Program is packed with a variety of complimentary or budget-friendly activities for attendees to enjoy.

From the Queerokie karaoke night hosted by Margie Martin to the insightful Writing Blak and Queer Panel featuring Australia’s most successful First Nations Queer writers and illustrators, there’s something for everyone. The Kimberley Blak Pride Spoken Word event promises moving performances from Magabala creators, Broome Queer storytellers, and community heroes, offering glimpses into the profound connections forged with culture, family, and place.

Fashion enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Still Here, Still Queer fashion showcase by award-winning artists and fashion designers Bobbie and Skye Lockyer. This groundbreaking event celebrates diversity, identity, and unapologetic self-expression, blending traditional elements with contemporary flair.

Film buffs can enjoy an evening under the stars with Queer Movies Under the Stars, featuring the best of Australian and International First Nations Queer cinema. From thought-provoking documentaries to captivating short films, this lineup promises entertainment and enlightenment.

And for those who love a good laugh, the Blak Balls Drag Bingo hosted by Mizz Ida-Ho Mo is sure to be a hit. Join in for an evening of outrageous Queer Blak Kimberley humor, bingo, and fabulous drag performances.

But the festival isn’t just about entertainment; it’s also about education and advocacy. The Kimberley Blak Pride Out and Proud Symposium brings together Queer change makers, community leaders, researchers, and SBLGBTIQA+ Aboriginal community organizations to discuss the experiences and needs of Kimberley Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander SBLGBTIQA+ mob. This inaugural event promises insightful discussions and meaningful connections.

The festival culminates in the Kimberley Blak Pride Extravaganza Dance Party, where attendees can dance the night away to the beats of the Kimberley’s best First Nations Drag Queens, Drag Kings, DJs, musos, and performers. Held at the transformed Goolarri Amphitheatre, this event promises epic sets, outrageous outfits, and the special Kimberley spirit that makes this festival truly unforgettable.
