The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) is set to return for its milestone 15th year, promising a vibrant celebration of First Nations art, culture, and creativity. Taking place in July, this eagerly anticipated event will feature an exciting lineup of artists, performers, fashion designers, and more, under the theme of ‘Country Speaking’. Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2024: Celebrating 15 Years of Cultural Excellence
A Testament to Queensland’s Thriving Indigenous Arts Scene
Francoise Lane, CIAF’s artistic director, reflects on the Fair’s journey, emphasizing its evolution from a modest Art Fair to a multifaceted celebration of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture. With a diverse range of participants hailing from communities across the region, CIAF has firmly established itself as a key event on both the local and international arts calendar.
A Dynamic Program of Events
The CIAF program promises an array of engaging activities for visitors of all ages. From the Art Awards and Fashion Performance to workshops on ghost net weaving and digital drawing, attendees can immerse themselves in Indigenous creativity and craftsmanship. Key venues include the Cairns Convention Centre, Bulmba-ja Arts Centre, Cairns Art Gallery, and Tanks Arts Centre, each offering a unique backdrop for cultural exchange and artistic expression.
Showcasing Artistic Excellence
The heart of CIAF lies in its signature Art Fair exhibition, featuring over 300 works selected for their artistic merit and interpretation of the ‘Country Speaking’ theme. Artists are invited to explore their connection to the land, waters, skies, and seas, reflecting on 65,000 years of Indigenous heritage and wisdom. Additionally, a special exhibition titled ‘Not Selling Cakes’ will honor artists who have contributed to CIAF’s legacy since its inception.
A Platform for Indigenous Voices
Queensland’s Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Arts, Leeanne Enoch, underscores the government’s commitment to supporting CIAF as a cornerstone of Queensland’s cultural landscape. With a $1 million investment, CIAF provides a vital platform for Indigenous artists to showcase their work, share their stories, and connect with audiences both locally and globally.
Warm-Up Events
Ahead of the official CIAF program, the city of Cairns will come alive with a series of ‘warm-up’ events, including BLAKtivation—a showcase of art, music, dance, and markets—and Music on the Lawn featuring performances by local musicians. These prelude events set the stage for the main festivities, culminating in a four-day extravaganza of Indigenous culture and creativity.
