The prestigious accolade, announced in the 2024 edition of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, celebrates Gardner’s outstanding performance during the previous English summer, particularly her crucial role in Australia’s successful Ashes tour of England in June and July 2023.

Gardner’s standout achievement was her historic 12-wicket-haul in the Women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, the second-best match figures ever recorded in a women’s Test match. Her stellar performance was instrumental in Australia’s retention of the Ashes trophy, earning her the Player of the Ashes Series award.

In addition to her bowling prowess, Gardner also made significant contributions with the bat, scoring 208 runs at an average of 26 in Australia’s middle order throughout the series.

This recognition adds to Gardner’s impressive list of accolades over the past year, including being named ICC Player of the Month three times and receiving the prestigious 2024 Belinda Clark Medal.

The Wisden Cricketers of the Year award, dating back to 1889, is one of cricket’s oldest individual honors, and Gardner’s inclusion as the sole female recipient underscores her remarkable achievements and contributions to the sport.
