Kicking off the celebrations is a special screening of the documentary The Last Daughter, followed by a ‘meet the author’ session with Brenda Matthews. Scheduled for Friday, July 5, from 2 pm to 5 pm, this event promises to be a highlight. Ms. Matthews will share her personal journey, reflecting on her childhood experiences and her path towards understanding and reconciliation. Her compelling narrative is sure to inspire participants, fostering deeper connections and mutual understanding.

The NAIDOC Week celebrations also feature a variety of events tailored for children during the school holidays. Highlights include:

  • NAIDOC Storytime: Aimed at children aged 0-7, this engaging storytelling session takes place on Thursday, July 11, from 10 am to 11 am.
  • Rock Painting Workshops: Led by Wiradjuri artist Peta-Joy Williams, these workshops are designed for children aged 5-12. They will be held on Monday, July 8, with two sessions at 10:30 am and 12 pm.

Additionally, a daily NAIDOC puzzle trail will run from Sunday, July 7, to Sunday, July 14, from 10 am to 5 pm, offering a fun and educational way for families to engage with the themes of NAIDOC Week.

Philip Ruddock, Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council, encourages all residents to take part in these enriching events. “NAIDOC Week provides a wonderful opportunity for residents to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” he said. “We’re proud to present these free events for our community during NAIDOC Week 2024.
