Sobah Beverages, a non-alcoholic craft beer company founded by husband-and-wife team Clinton and Lozen Schultz, has been named one of three finalists in the First Nations category of the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards. Established in 2017 on Kombumerri country on the Gold Coast, Sobah has gained recognition for its innovative approach to raising awareness of First Nations culture while promoting sober socializing. Sobah’s non-alcoholic craft beers, infused with native fruit and spices, have made the company a standout in the industry. They join Kakadu Organics from Samford Village and Cairns-based Mainie Australia as finalists in the Indigenous category for 2024.
Clinton Schultz, director of Sobah Beverages, expressed his pride in being recognized as a finalist. “This nomination not only recognizes our commitment to producing high-quality, non-alcoholic beverages that celebrate First Nation’s culture and ingredients, but also highlights our efforts in taking our unique products to the international market,” Schultz said. “It validates our mission to share First Nations knowledge and sustainable practices with the world.”
Sobah has been actively supported by Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ), which has played a key role in helping the company achieve its export goals. “TIQ has provided us with valuable market insights, export readiness advice, and opportunities to connect with international distributors and buyers,” Schultz added.
A year ago, Sobah established its home at Burleigh Heads, launching a 50hL brewery complete with a café, art gallery, and retail shop. Despite some delays, the company proudly launched a new-look product range earlier this year, marking a new chapter in its journey.
TIQ’s chief executive officer, Justin McGowan, highlighted the importance of supporting First Nations businesses like Sobah. “Australia’s First Nations people are our first traders, and it’s crucial that we support businesses in every corner of Queensland to achieve export success,” McGowan said. He praised the Indigenous business finalists, calling them “great inspirations to First Nations businesses.”
The Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards, now in their 34th year, recognize the innovation, resilience, and determination of Queensland businesses striving to grow globally. Winners will be announced on September 4 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, with national category winners representing Queensland at the Australian Export Awards in Canberra in November.
