With over 17 years of experience as a practising contemporary artist, King has consistently explored the intersection of storytelling, culture, and landscape in her work. This new collaboration with Edition reflects these themes, bringing them to life in a fashion format that seamlessly blends traditional artistry with modern design.

King’s collaboration with Edition founder Alice Sutton is rooted in a longstanding friendship and mutual admiration. “I was inspired to apply to Country to Couture from the overwhelming love I’ve received for the garments I’ve created over the years for myself,” King shared. “For close to a decade, I have collaborated with Alice from Edition. We first worked together in 2014 on a small line of pieces focused on my elements series. From there, we worked on a series of one-off dresses. I have always loved Alice’s designs and how comfortable, flattering, and classic they are.”

The collection showcased at Country to Couture features screen-printed and hand-painted garments that draw directly from King’s artistic vision. “Being an established artist for close to 20 years and bringing my designs to the Country to Couture show is another way for me to share my story, and my love for the land and country I call home,” King said. She emphasized the significance of showcasing her designs on Larrakia Country, her own community, where the collection’s mix of street-ready looks and bold, gala-worthy gowns made a powerful impression on the audience.

The new collection, characterized by rich metallics, linens, and earthy tones, aims to evoke a deep connection to the land. “The artwork is reflective of land,” King explained. “The colour palettes and textures evoke the sense behind the painted stories themselves, of being close to country, feeling connected to land, and at home in the environment. As with my artwork, my stories aim to evoke the feeling of connection, for people to sense the innate bond between land and Indigenous people.”

King also noted the increasing opportunities for First Nations creatives, particularly in the fashion industry. “There are a lot more opportunities now than there were 10 years ago,” she said. “With the rise of social media, Indigenous art—especially emerging art—has a ready-made platform. Australian brands have been given access to these creators like never before. These collaborations seem to be mutually beneficial, and they’re great and have their place.”

Looking ahead, King sees a bright future for Indigenous fashion, with more creatives taking risks and an increase in high-fashion First Nations brands. “I see First Nations high-end couture, streetwear, footwear, and lingerie only growing from here,” she predicted. “If we back ourselves and one another, Indigenous fashion can be as big as the Aboriginal art movement.”

Despite her busy schedule, King remains focused on new opportunities and further collaborations. Following her recent exhibition at the India Art Fair, presented by the High Commission of India, she is preparing for overseas exhibitions and expanding her brand, KingKing, with her sister Tarisse. Additionally, King recently launched a local UV printing business, King Print NT, and is excited about its future growth.

Reflecting on her experience with Edition, King expressed optimism about the future of their partnership. “Collaborating with Edition has been amazing this year. We will see where this show takes us, and no doubt strengthen our partnership,” she said.

Sarrita King’s journey from canvas to couture is a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration, and cultural connection, offering a glimpse into the future of Indigenous fashion.
