$6.9 Million Partnership Delivers New Affordable Housing in Tennant Creek

A $6.9 million partnership between the Northern Territory Government, the federal government, Housing Australia, and Venture Housing Company is bringing much-needed safe, secure, and affordable housing to Tennant Creek. This initiative aims to support vulnerable members of the community, including older women at risk of homelessness, women and children fleeing domestic and family violence, and eligible Aboriginal people. $6.9 Million Partnership Delivers New Affordable Housing in Tennant Creek

The project will deliver 12 new two-bedroom homes across three adjoining sites, offering a mix of social and affordable housing options. Venture Housing is leading the development, contributing both land and $1.5 million towards the project costs. This effort is further supported by a joint $1.9 million grant from the Territory and Commonwealth governments under the Barkly Regional Deal, an additional $500,000 capital grant from the Territory government, and a $3 million grant from Housing Australia.

NT Minister for Urban Housing Ngaree Ah Kit emphasized the importance of secure housing for Territorians, stating, “The construction of new homes in Tennant Creek not only supports the objectives of the Barkly Regional Deal to improve the liveability of the region but also means more housing for Territorians in need. Everyone deserves to have a place to call home, and we are proud to be working with the Commonwealth Government, Housing Australia, and Venture to transform the way social and affordable housing is delivered in the Northern Territory.”

This project marks the first Northern Territory-targeted grant from Housing Australia, funded through the National Housing Infrastructure Facility Fund for Social and Affordable Housing. It represents a significant step in the NT Community Housing Growth Strategy 2022–32, which aims to overhaul housing delivery in the region by fostering sector-led housing services, community renewal, and attracting non-government investment.

Housing Australia chief executive Nathan Dal Bon expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its importance for Tennant Creek, which has one of the highest homelessness rates in Australia. “This is a great example of how the Commonwealth Government is working with states and territories and registered community housing providers to support the community housing sector to deliver homes for vulnerable people, including Indigenous Australians,” Dal Bon said.

Karen Walsh, CEO of Venture Housing Company, praised the collaborative effort, stating, “This joint investment approach makes a huge and positive difference to what we can now deliver, and our partnership demonstrates what can be achieved when we all share the vision. This is our second development in Tennant Creek, and we’re excited that these homes will enable our tenants to access opportunities and achieve their aspirations.”

The homes are expected to be completed by February 2025, providing much-needed housing for those in the Tennant Creek community. This project is a significant step forward in addressing the housing crisis in the region, ensuring that vulnerable Territorians have a safe place to call home.
