Launching First Nations Playgroup Pilot to Empower Indigenous Families

In a significant move aimed at supporting Indigenous children and their families, the federal government has announced the launch of a pioneering First Nations playgroup pilot program. Timed just after National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, this initiative underscores the theme “Strong in Culture, Stronger Together,” emphasizing community, culture, and early childhood development. Thirteen Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations nationwide will receive over $2.1 million in funding through this pilot program. This funding will facilitate the creation of accessible, affordable play spaces equipped with resources that foster learning and community engagement for First Nations children. It also offers essential social and parenting support networks for parents and caregivers.

Partnering with the federal government, SNAICC – National Voice for our Children will play a pivotal role in program implementation. Catherine Liddle, CEO of SNAICC, highlighted the community-driven nature of the initiative, empowering local leaders to innovate solutions that address gaps in early childhood development.

“First Nations Playgroups are deeply rooted in local contexts,” Ms. Liddle noted, “tailoring activities to meet the unique needs and aspirations of each community and its families. These playgroups adopt an integrated, intergenerational approach to early learning, ensuring children are well-prepared for their educational journey.”

The initiative aligns with Target 4 of the Closing the Gap Implementation Plan, which aims to increase the proportion of Indigenous children developmentally on track by 2031. Federal Minister for Social Services, Amanda Rishworth, highlighted the broader benefits of playgroups, emphasizing their positive impact on children, parents, and communities nationwide.

“Expanding culturally informed First Nations playgroups underscores our commitment to enhancing the lives of all Australian children,” Minister Rishworth affirmed. “By fostering stronger family and community bonds through community-led initiatives, we aim to bolster early learning and developmental outcomes for First Nations children.”

The government’s investment aims to create culturally safe environments where Indigenous children and families can access vital services close to home. This initiative aligns with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap’s priorities, emphasizing formal partnerships and strengthening the community-controlled sector.

As the First Nations Playgroups Pilot unfolds, it promises to enrich community bonds, empower Indigenous families, and pave the way for a brighter future for First Nations children across Australia.
