Garma Festival: A Celebration of Indigenous Culture and Environmental Stewardship

Country, culture and connection are the heart of ceremonies and celebrations at Garma Festival.

The Garma Festival in the Northern Territory has concluded, leaving a lasting impact beyond the departing political figures. At its core, the four-day event celebrated Indigenous culture, connecting clans and families through art, music, and traditional dance.

This year, a new stage dedicated to environmental protection was unveiled, marked by a special sea country bunggul. A new flag, designed to represent the land and its people, was raised as a symbol of unity and connection.

The stage itself was constructed using recycled materials, including ghost nets – a stark reminder of the environmental challenges facing the region. Rangers tirelessly work to clear these harmful plastics from beaches and waterways, protecting the delicate marine ecosystem.

For Indigenous communities, protecting country is intrinsically linked to preserving cultural traditions. By safeguarding the land, they ensure the continuation of songs, dances, and stories for future generations.
