Coalesce: A Unique Showcase of Western Australian Talent

A unique art exhibition, Coalesce, is set to debut at Kolbusz Space in Perth on August 3, in conjunction with the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial. This exhibition will feature groundbreaking techniques from artists both within and outside the realm of traditional craftsmanship, presenting distinct textiles by Aboriginal artists from regional Western Australia alongside modern ceramics by two Fremantle/Walyalup-based artists.Coalesce: A Unique Showcase of Western Australian Talent

Organised by Sandra Murray, Coalesce will showcase the sculptural ceramics of Tom Freeman and Holly O’Meehan alongside textiles by Anita Churchill, Kelly-Ann Drill, Delany Griffiths, Dora Griffiths, and Cathy Ward from Waringarri Aboriginal Arts.

In 2024, the Waringarri artists will transition to screen-printing, marking the debut of their dynamic textiles that incorporate the culturally significant motifs of the Miriwoong people.

Holly O’Meehan, raised in the Great Southern, examines the effects of colonial agricultural practices on the natural environment in Western Australia’s Great Southern and Southwest Regions. She integrates handmade clay and ceramic pieces with organic materials and repurposed items, creating a harmonious blend of natural and crafted elements.

Tom Freeman creatively combines unconventional media with clay forms, exploring the physical transformations of clay beyond his control. The artist from Fremantle incorporates found objects from his everyday experiences to create surprising and vibrant results.

Waringarri Aboriginal Arts stands as the first entirely Indigenous-owned art centre in the Kimberley and is recognized as one of the oldest continuously functioning art centres in Australia. Their participation in Coalesce highlights the richness and diversity of Indigenous art in the region.

Coalesce is proud to be part of the IOTA24 Festival, celebrating the innovation and talent of Western Australian artists. The exhibition promises to be a remarkable fusion of traditional and contemporary art, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and artistic innovation of the region.
