The NAIDOC Ball featured live performances and an awards ceremony encompassing various categories, highlighting the achievements and contributions of Indigenous individuals and organizations. One of the night’s standout moments was Garawa and Butchulla man Fred Leone winning the 2024 Music Award.

“I spent my whole adult life creating something out of nothing,” Leone said. “I always thought it doesn’t matter if I make it or not, I’m just doing what I love and I’m leaving a legacy for the next generation. To this community and the Brisbane blaks who helped raise me… I would not have the opportunity and the career in the music industry I have today.”

Leone is set to perform at the Brisbane Festival on 1 September in the Meanjin Songlinez show, a premier event offering a deep immersion into the rich tapestry of Indigenous culture and creativity.
