Indigenous Wavemakers to Perform at Regional & Remote Music Summit in Darwin
J-Milla, a proud Marranungu rapper and musician, is making waves in the Australian hip-hop scene. Born and raised in Darwin, and hailing from the bloodline of the traditional landowners of Litchfield National Park, J-Milla infuses his cultural heritage and ethics into the music he’s been creating since he was 11 years old. He will be joined by his younger brother, Yung Milla, who is known for his powerful live performances and has received acclaim from triple j. Adding to the lineup is Māori artist Juran, who will bring his unique sound to the stage.
Michelle Lucia from Live Nation expressed her excitement about bringing the event to the Northern Territory for the first time, highlighting Darwin’s burgeoning music scene. “Darwin’s music scene is overflowing with potential, and we’re honoured to be a part of its growth with Ones To Watch,” Lucia said. “This event represents our dedication to nurturing artists across Australia while also contributing to the cultural and economic vitality of regional and remote communities.”The Regional & Remote Music Summit will visit Darwin next month. The Summit Program will feature a diverse array of presentations, including research, panel sessions, case studies, keynotes, and workshops. These sessions will address broad themes such as Place, Storytelling, and Culture; Regional and Remote Live Music and Festivals; Adapting to the Climate Crisis; Understanding Audiences; The Importance of Safe Spaces; Skills Gaps and Building Capacity; and Policy and Investment.
“Regional and remote areas play a critical role in shaping Australia’s music industry,” said Mark Smith, executive director of MusicNT. “The Summit is a unique opportunity to bring together diverse voices to explore and address the challenges and opportunities faced by these communities.”
The event will amplify the voices of the 7 million Australians who live outside metropolitan areas and are often underrepresented in the music industry. The Ones to Watch event is being held as part of Darwin’s Regional & Remote Music Summit.
Attendees can look forward to several exciting events across the three days, including the Ones To Watch showcase and a Keynote and Q&A session with the legendary Michael Chugg. Renowned both locally and internationally as one of Australia’s foremost music promoters, Chugg has maintained a strong connection with regional Australia throughout his career. He has previously brought Elton John to perform in Darwin, raised millions for disaster recovery in Australia’s regions, and continues to invest in grassroots artist development through Chugg Music.
With both the Ones To Watch event and the broader Music Summit set to draw large crowds, these events will undoubtedly highlight the raw talent of artists living in Australia’s Top End.
The Regional & Remote Music Summit will be held at the Vibe Hotel on Darwin’s Waterfront from August 7-9. This initiative by MusicNT is co-funded by the Northern Territory Government and the Australian Government through Music Australia.
