Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre is set to stage the Australian debut of “Romeo and Julie,” a contemporary and humorous love story loosely inspired by Shakespeare. The adaptation reimagines the classic tale, introducing Romeo, a dedicated single father, and Julie, a young woman determined to pursue her dream of studying physics at university despite their different upbringings.
Director Kamarra Bell-Wykes Kamarra Bell-Wykes, a Yagera and Butchulla woman, will bring her extensive experience and creative vision to the production. With numerous accolades to her name, including the Kate Challis RAKA Award and the Patrick White Playwrights Award from the Sydney Theatre Company, Bell-Wykes is poised to make a significant impact on this contemporary adaptation.
Actress Shontane Farmer Shontane Farmer, a Noongar and Yamatji actor from Perth, will portray Julie. A graduate of WAAPA and a participant in Red Stitch’s Hansen Graduate program, Farmer’s passion for the arts began at a young age. She competed in Junior Rock Eisteddfods from age eight and attended John Curtin College of the Arts for contemporary dance. Farmer aims to use her platform to tell Indigenous stories and address the underrepresentation of Indigenous people in theatre and on television screens.
Co-Star Damon Baudin Joining Farmer is co-star Damon Baudin, who will play Romeo. Their dynamic on stage is expected to bring the characters’ love story to life, captivating audiences with their performances.
Previous Success “Romeo and Julie” received rave reviews in the UK, earning a 5-star rating during its successful run at the National Theatre and Sherman Theatre. The Australian premiere at Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre promises to be an equally compelling experience for audiences.
