Specsavers has partnered with talented Gurindji Waanyi contemporary Aboriginal artists, sisters Sarrita and Tarisse King, to create a new line of limited-edition glasses. This collaboration not only offers stylish frames adorned with beautiful artwork, but also supports a worthy cause: The Fred Hollows Foundation’s Indigenous Australia Program. Specsavers Teams Up with Aboriginal Artists for Limited-Edition Glasses Supporting Eye Health
Art Meets Eyewear for a Good Cause
Available since July 4th, these limited-edition frames feature the King sisters’ artwork titled “My Country’s Story.” This piece captures the essence of Australia’s Top End, reflecting the lives of the communities that call this land home. For every frame sold, $25 will be donated to The Fred Hollows Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving eye health accessibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The Inspiration Behind the Artwork
The King sisters, daughters of renowned Indigenous artist William King Jungala, are passionate about using their art to tell stories and support their community. “My Country’s Story” is a fusion of two of their individual works: Tarisse’s “My Country” and Sarrita’s “Language of the Earth.” The aerial perspective showcases the diverse landscapes of the Top End, while the contrasting strokes and dots represent the ever-evolving growth of Indigenous communities.
Addressing the Eye Health Gap
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians face significant challenges when it comes to eye health. They are three times more likely to experience vision impairment or blindness compared to non-Indigenous Australians. Furthermore, cataracts are 12 times more prevalent among Indigenous populations. Despite these alarming statistics, over one-third of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults haven’t had a single eye exam.
Specsavers, with their long-standing partnership with The Fred Hollows Foundation, aims to bridge this gap. Through this limited-edition collection, they hope to raise $500,000 to support the Foundation’s crucial work. The stylish frames are available for purchase both in-store and online.
