First Knowledges: Exploring Indigenous Innovation in Australia

At the recent Melbourne Writers Festival, Professors Lynette Russell and Ian McNiven presented their latest book, “Innovation: Knowledge and Ingenuity,” in a compelling podcast hosted by Larissa Behrendt. This sell-out session delved into their research on Indigenous innovation, featured prominently in their work “First Knowledges: Innovation.”

Indigenous Australians have long been pioneers in innovation, showcasing expertise and ingenuity that spans millennia. Their contributions include body shaping techniques, the construction of artificial reefs for oyster farming, the transformation of European glass into spearheads, and innovative economic responses to colonization.

The podcast, facilitated by Larissa Behrendt, provides unique insights into Indigenous social and spiritual practices, trading strategies, and land-management techniques. These traditions not only honor cultural heritage but also offer resourceful solutions to contemporary challenges.
