Equity Trainee of the Year: Leah Garling
Leah Garling, a community worker at Centacare FNQ’s Manoora Neighbourhood Centre, was awarded the coveted Equity Trainee of the Year title. Her journey is a testament to resilience and determination. After experiencing a personal loss, Garling dedicated herself to caring for her grandchildren while pursuing personal and professional growth.
Through Centacare FNQ’s Park Hub Traineeship, she completed a Certificate 1 in Workplace Skills, which ultimately led to her current role as a community worker. Garling’s unwavering commitment to her community, coupled with her professional development, has made her a truly deserving recipient of this award.
Training Initiative of the Year: Upcyclinc
Centacare FNQ’s Upcyclinc initiative also claimed victory, earning the Training Initiative of the Year award. This innovative program has empowered 30 trainees to complete their Certificate I in Construction and Business Workplace Skills in 2023. With a strong focus on hands-on learning and tailored support, Upcyclinc has successfully created pathways to meaningful employment for participants.
The program’s exceptional outcomes, including a 93% employment or further education rate for CALD and First Nation community members, highlight its effectiveness in providing job and career opportunities.
A Commitment to Community
Centacare FNQ’s dedication to creating an inclusive and connected community is evident through its various services, including family and children services, mental health, care coordination, and multicultural services. The organization’s multicultural services division, CMS, is the driving force behind the Upcyclinc initiative, providing essential support to migrants, refugees, and First Nations job seekers.
Both Leah Garling and the Upcyclinc program will now represent Tropical North Queensland at the state awards in Brisbane on September 7. Centacare FNQ is optimistic about their chances and looks forward to continuing their impactful work.
