The Wilderness Society has unveiled the highly anticipated shortlists for the Karajia and Environment Awards for Children’s Literature. These prestigious awards celebrate the power of storytelling in fostering connection to Country, language, and community, as well as inspiring a deep-rooted love for nature. Karajia Award: Honoring First Nations Voices

The Karajia Award, established in 2022, recognizes exceptional children’s books that celebrate First Nations storytelling. This year’s shortlist features a diverse range of captivating works that delve into the heart of Indigenous culture, history, and connection to land.

One standout nominee is Nedingar: Ancestors by Wilman, Ballardong Noongar woman Isobel Bevis, and Wudjari and Goreng Noongar woman Leanne Zilm. This dual-language book takes readers on a journey of discovery, exploring the profound bond between people and Country through the eyes of a child eager to meet their ancestors.

Environment Award: Inspiring Future Conservationists

Now in its 30th year, the Environment Award for Children’s Literature continues to champion books that ignite a passion for nature and environmental stewardship. The 2024 shortlist showcases a diverse range of captivating stories and informative texts that explore the wonders of the natural world.

Notable Nominees

Both award categories feature an impressive lineup of talented authors and illustrators. Some noteworthy titles include:

  • The Trees by Victor Steffensen and Sandra Steffensen (nominated for both awards)
  • Nedingar: Ancestors by Isobel Bevis and Leanne Zilm (Karajia Award)
  • Hope is the Thing by Johanna Bell and Erica Wagner (Environment Award)

The winners of the Karajia and Environment Awards will be announced in October.
