The Murri School in Acacia Ridge buzzed with activity on Friday as they hosted their annual Family Fun Day in celebration of NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme, “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud,” resonated throughout the event. Murri School Celebrates NAIDOC Week with Family Fun Day!
A Celebration of Culture
The day kicked off with a traditional acknowledgment to Country, followed by captivating performances from Yuggera dancers and the Torres Strait Island Kutaw Zoeru Dance Group. These vibrant displays showcased the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous Australians.
Community Spirit Shines
Approximately 1,500 attendees enjoyed a diverse range of activities throughout the day. Indigenous vendors and stalls offered valuable resources and promoted health awareness among Indigenous communities and youth.
Sharing the Spirit
Proud Wooli Wooli and Wakka Wakka woman, and The Murri School Principal, Tanya Saltner, emphasized the importance of cultural sharing: “The theme of NAIDOC is something we do every day,” she said. “My favourite part is seeing everyone having a great time and the community coming together to experience our culture.”
Fun for All Ages
Children were entertained with exciting rides and rock climbing activities, while an Elders’ tent provided a space for relaxation and socializing for older attendees.
Celebrating Heritage and Unity
The Murri School’s Family Fun Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community and cultural pride. It’s a day where people of all ages come together to celebrate Indigenous heritage, traditions, and the enduring strength of Indigenous Australians.
