Mr. Stewart expressed his commitment to honoring the legacy of the organization’s founder and namesake, the esteemed Dr. Lowitja O’Donoghue, who passed away earlier in 2024. “I am dedicated to upholding her vision of supporting health research led by and for our people,” he declared.

He also extended his gratitude to Adjunct Professor Janine Mohamed for her leadership and mentorship. Looking forward, Mr. Stewart emphasized his eagerness to “continue our work to drive positive change and improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.”

Strength in Experience

The Board Chair, Selwyn Button, expressed the Board’s pride in appointing Mr. Stewart, acknowledging his pivotal role in championing Aboriginal-led research initiatives. “His extensive experience in strategic leadership, coupled with his deep understanding and commitment to supporting our community-controlled organizations nationwide, makes him an ideal candidate,” Mr. Button stated. He further highlighted the Board’s anticipation of working with Mr. Stewart to solidify the Institute’s role in empowering community-driven research and influencing health research policy reform to benefit Indigenous Australians.

Longstanding Dedication

Pat Anderson, co-patron of the Lowitja Institute alongside Dr. Lowitja O’Donoghue, echoed her support for Mr. Stewart’s appointment. Having known Mr. Stewart since his time with ONEMDA, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing unit at the University of Melbourne, Ms. Anderson commended his dedication and commitment to social justice in healthcare. She concluded by expressing her eagerness to collaborate with Mr. Stewart in his new role and ensure the Institute’s vital work continues to flourish.

Mr. Stewart assumes his position as CEO effective immediately.
